G L I D E R S

Modern gliders have a long narrow wings and they use a flow of air to fly in the sky for hours. A glider has no engine, or some system of impulse. It moves quietly in the air and flies large distances. Gliders have a long history.
The first glider was created in 1853. In 1890 German engineer Otto Lilienthal showed how to control a glider.

Wright brothers created a lot of gliders to learn the principles of flight. Gliders were used for military purposes in World War II. Glider was built by prisoners of war.

When shuttle returns to earth it lands like a glider.
